They Were Eleven is a strange and touching shoujo manga science fiction tale by Hagio Moto, one of the forty-niners. It was published in the 1970s in Japan, and then published in the US by Viz in series form--the collection is still in print, I believe. Matt Thorn was the translator. Synopsis: Ten applicants to a university are left alone on a space station/ship to handle whatever may arise. Any call for help results in the entire class's failing. When there turn out to be eleven kids on the ship instead of ten, things start to get very, very strange. As often the case with Moto, confusing romantic attractions and androgyny play major roles. Spooky and engrossing; highly recommended. I haven't seen the anime version, so I can't add anything about it.
