In another illustration of "the manga is better," the Sailor Moon manga by Naoko Takeuchi is far superior to the anime. Less facile in both art style and storyline, it is also uncensored (so the male-male and female-female couples remain that way, rather than having abrupt corporate sex changes). The artwork is very pretty in a girlish kind of way--keep in mind that Sailor Moon is a manga/show for young girls. (Pre-teens, that is, and certainly not adult men.) Being this kind of work, it is still not too deep, but at least there's a little less fluff than there is in the TV show. It is available in translation.
