A small town on a peninsula on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand, sandwiched between the Southern Alps and the Pacific ocean.

Kaikoura is notable for its unusual geography: The sea floor drops of very rapidly into deep, cold ocean. As a result, Kaikoura is famous for whale and dolphin acitivity, and excellent diving. It is also well known for its crayfish, which are caught by local divers and can be bought from stalls on the side of the road.

The prevailing weather in Kaikoura is an easterly sea breeze, which often brings fog or low cloud.
