A kind of glaze on pottery. It is of a rich dark colour varying from deep reddish-brown to black. It is "reduction fired" and forms a fairly smooth, even coating usually.
In Chinese it is known as jian yao, and is most closely associated with the Song Dynasty. After it was introduced to Japan it was for a long time the glaze of choice for tea bowls.
