Kreator is a
thrash metal band from Germany. Formed in 1984 and originally named
Tormentor, the lineup features
Mille Petrozza on guitar and vocals,
Jürgen Rell on drums,
Christian "Speesy" Glesler on bass, and
Sami Yli-Sirniö on guitar.
Kreator was one of the most influential European
thrash outfits in terms of their overwhelming impact on the overall genre of
metal (along with the likes of
Sodom,
Destruction, and the hugely important
Bathory). They also happened to be one of the few "
proto-death metal" bands, willing to experiment within the usually confining walls of their genre. They became hugely popular with the surge of
metal's popularity in the late 80's and early 90's, particularly in Europe, and they still tour to this day (I went to their show last night in NYC- it was really good).
