In the year AD 1399...

• John of Gaunt, uncle of English king Richard II and father of nobleman Henry Bolingbroke dies. Richard then cancels the parts of John's will saying that Henry should inherit his father's lands, leading Henry to take up arms against the unpopular Richard and eventually forcing him to abdicate, thus becoming King Henry IV of England.
