The Popularity Conundrum is a singular phenomenon in which the people who run with the "Popular Crowd", especially in high school, are loathed and gossiped about by everyone else. The logical question is this: why are they called "popular" if everyone hates them? Should they not be called the "Disfavored Crowd" or the "Anathematized Crowd" instead?

Perhaps being "different" has become so fashionable that the word "popular" has taken on a negative connotation. Therefore, the ultimate insult (at least to a fashionably different high school kid) is, "You're popular." Or maybe we're all just jealous of them...well, I'm not jealous.
