While most people know about their states official bird or flower, very few people know that each state now has its own “Official Soil”. The “State Soil” is a relatively new thing that has just come about in the past 3 or 4 years (since roughly 1999).

Each “Official State Soil” is generally named for a town or landmark where it was first recognized. Each soil has its own unique characteristics such as color, texture, consistency, and mineral and chemical composition. Also a state soil does not have to be unique to a state, several of the soils types can be found covering an area across several states.
