Traditionally "sold" as an expression of disbelief. I mean, to say that something is not to be believed, you imply that anyone who believes it is incredibly gullible by offering to sell them the Brooklyn Bridge:
"...and if you believe that, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you..."
