The Iriomote cat (Felis iriomotensis) is one of the rarest wild cats. Found only on Iriomote Island which is one of the southernmost islands of Japan, it was not discovered until 1965. They are fully protected by the Japanese government, but economic development on the island may be depriving them of habitat, and there are estimated to be only about a hundred left in the wild. They are about the size of domestic cats, nocturnal, thought to be partly arboreal and to eat a large variety of small reptiles, mammals, birds, insects, crabs, and fish.
