Titian was perhaps the greatest
artist of
Venice. he worked in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, producing work remarkable for its
colour and
magnificence.
He was born in Pieve but soon showed such artistic flair that his parents sent him to work in Venice. Here he learned the basics of art which he went on to adapt and develop his own
style.
When he became the
official state painter of Venice, Titian painted
portraits of noblemen and undertook many of his finest pictures. Perhaps the greatest is
The Assumption of the Virgin which he produced in 1518.
In his later years Titian produced many works for the
Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of
Spain and many of his paintings are still in Spain. When he died in 1576, he was the acknowledged master of the colour technique he made his own.
