I saw
Brian Eno speak at
UC Berkeley, around
1980. I'd been following his
work for some time at that point, and found him to be one of the few people I held in such awe that I could not even fathom being in the same room with him, let alone asking him questions after the discussion. I was a lot
younger then, I might have a few things to bring up to him now.
In any case, he talked a bit about just that, about being a person in a position where people treated him like a
god or an apex of some kind. To share his
perspective, he told a story of being in
San Francisco several years earlier and seeing, spray painted on a wall, the slogan "
Eno is God", and directly underneath that, in another hand, "
God is dead". He said that summed it up perfectly for him.
