1) A
variety of
red wine made from
Montepulciano grapes. It is
characterized by deep red color, low acidity,
moderate tannins, and full,
fruity flavor. It is an easy wine to drink, and I have long
favored it as a
sippin' wine (rather than one I drink with dinner). It is primarily grown near the
Adriatic coast in central and southern
Italy, and is primarily found under the
appellation of
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC.
2) A town in Tuscany known for its Vino Nobile wine, based on the popular Sangiovese grape variety. Because it is so often labeled "Vino Nobile di Montepulciano," it is very frequently confused with actual Montepulciano wine (which tends to be a little lighter tasting than Vino Nobile).
