Some
companies require a lot of
IP addresses, but they were too late to get a
class B IP address. By
supernetting, you can combine several
class C addresses into one fat
virtual class B address.
InterNIC assigns eight class C addresses that have the same high-order bit, and the subnet mask is shortened to add hosts and reduce the network portion of the address.
