The Julian Date method of indicating a particular date is as follows:

  yyyyddd

 yyyy = year
  ddd = day

This method of datekeeping is used extensively by the US Military, although sometimes in a modified format (yddd). When performing maintenance on US Navy aircraft, all of the work is documented using the julian date. If an inspection is on a calendar basis (30-day inspection, 7-day inspection), the month and day of the week have no bearing on when an inspection is due (30 days means 30 days, not February 1st to March 1st, which is less than 30 days).
