Steely Dan were always ahead of their time, and in this case they came out with a song in that managed to pre-emptively
satirize, by about 10 years, the
bass-heavy lovey-dovey
crooner R&B garbage that would begin to infect pop
radio 10 years later with the likes of
Boyz II Men and
Bel Biv Devoe.
Only in the Steely Dan version, our young maiden is not whisked off her feet by a dreamy tenor voiced clean cut High School stud, but rather a decaying middle aged man leering and urging her to 'skate a little lower,' and partake of the Cuervo Gold and some of that 'fine Colombian.' Brilliant stuff.
