David J. Matthews, played on an
acoustic guitar. Supposedly only played twice (3.23.93 and 7.6.93) at
Trax Night Club in
Charlottesville,
Virgina--though I've heard rumors that a third performance exists on tape. The song was named by
DMB soundman
Jeff Bagby, who created the original names for several early
Dave Matthews Band songs.
The lyrics were never constant for this song, completely improvised and completely different each time. But the melody itself is hauntingly beautiful and unmistakable, and I'm not alone in wishing a more definitive version had made its way into the studio.
