In his early years he worked chiefly in Watercolor. Thought to be the best Watercolorist in America during the 20th Century. Best known for his New York and Maine landscapes, he visited New Mexico in 1929 and at the behest of Georgia O'Keefe he painted a series of New Mexico landscapes. Championed by Alfred Stieglitz at his Gallery 291.
