Brendan Byrne, then governor of New Jersey, notoriously named the arena after himself when the Meadowlands Sports Complex was completed in 1981. By the time Continental Airlines purchased the naming rights, the arena had become colloquially known as the "Meadowlands Arena", though that was never its official name.
