Goof-offs (or Jesters in the GBC remake) actually do have a very important and powerful skill - when they reach level 20, they can become Sages without needing the Book Of Sages. In fact, it's actually better to get your Sages via this method, as the twenty levels of Jester give your Sage a nice bonus to luck.
