Short for 'Pressens Faglige Utvalg', or 'The Professional Committee of the Press'. This is an organisation under
NP, the Norwegian Media Association. PFU monitors and judges newspapers for mistakes and violations of the
Vær Varsom statutes.
PFU is made up from representatives of the journalist union, the editor union and three members from the public. They have little power to sanction violators of the Vær Varsom statutes, but their critic is widely accepted as the de factö way of punishing violators. If a newspaper or other medium is found to have misbehaved and breached the statutes of good conduct, they have to publish an article apologizing for the misbehaviour.
