The National Coalition for the Homless, NCH created this day in 1990, to observe those that have died as homeless in America. The day chosen for this is the day of the longest night of the year. Recently, President Bush allowed this day to become an offically recognized day.

During this day, people are encouraged to help out with the homeless or even spend a night living like a homeless person out of memory of all those that died this year as homeless.
