The Australian pop duo Savage Garden was created by singer Darren Hayes and multi-instrumentalist Englishman Daniel Jones in 1996. The two first met while playing in bar bands in Queensland in 1994. Their first album, Savage Garden, was recorded in Sydney in June of 1996. They soon bacame popular with 'I Want You,' which became the biggest selling Australian single of 1996. 'I Want You' later became an international best seller and reached US number 4 in May 1997. In early 1998, 'Truly, Madly, Deeply' topped the US charts and spent several weeks in the UK top 10. Savage Garden made number 3 on the US album charts in April. It was certified 7x platinum February 1, 2000. Their second album, Affirmation, was recorded in San Francisco. It was certified 2x platinum on February 16, 2000. The single, 'I Knew I Loved You,' was certified gold by the RIAA January 27, 2000.
