Aldus Pius Manutius (né Teobaldo Mannucci) was a Venetian printer who is credited with the invention of italics in 1501.
(It was Francesco Griffo, who worked for him, who created the first italic typeface.)
The now-vanished desktop publishing company Aldus was named after him.
