The U.S. Department of Education sponsors the Center for Civic Education. The center's goal is to teach young people about the Constitution, what it means, what our rights are, and how to be a good citizen.

They also do work in other countries, mostly educating teachers in emerging democracies. One such effort is in Nigeria. The center has a project running in Nigeria called Project Citizen. This program has students do community service, kind of a classical republican idea.

The students look over their community and find something that needs changed. Once a problem is found, they fix it. Very simple. The purpose is to have students looking out for the common good of the community so that their democracy doesn't fall into a sort of individual campaign.
