Frances Moore Lappe originally wrote this non-fiction book in 1971 to teach people how they could improve their health and the overall condition of the environment by refraining from eating meat and learning to use complimentary protiens, vegetables, and fruits to sustain themselves. People thought she was a lunatic.

In 1991, she wrote the updated 20th Anniversary edition of the same book, with more recipes and an easier-to-read format, and this version has received significant critical acclaim.

The book includes simple rules for a healthy diet, a bunch of kitchen hints, and a comprehensive reference guide for planning and preparing meals and snacks and such. There are also about eleventy-nine recipes.

It's a fairly interesting read, even if you don't tend toward vegetarianism.
