WinG is the predecessor to
DirectX (or more precisely
DirectDraw) for
Microsoft Windows. The WinG
API provides means for
blitting graphics to the display card in a much faster way than what what previously available through normal
GDI functions.
WinG is available for 386 machines running Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95 and NT 4.
WinG can still be downloaded from MS's ftp server at
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/developr/DRG/Multimedia/Jumpstart/WING/WinG/
Be sure to take a look at the "wing-pr.txt" file in that directory for a press release from 1994.
