FirstSearch is an online service offered by OCLC that gives library patrons access to over 70 databases (including WorldCat). Users can quickly figure out if searched-for materials are in their own library's collection, or in the holdings of a nearby library.

Authors have been known to get a mild charge from finding their own works listed in FirstSearch ("The Peoria County Library bought my mystery novel! Woo Hoo!"). It's less exciting than seeing a positive review of your book in a local newspaper, but it's better than being cornered by an unwashed, mildly psychotic fanboy who's had one too many Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters at a science fiction convention.
