The introduction of Elizabeth Fry to the Bank of England's banknote portfolio has been it's most ironic statement as of yet.

Elizabeth Fry is best known as trying to improve the lives of women and young people.

However, she is the only person ever to appear on the English currency that has been made bankrupt. It was her husbands fault, Joseph Fry, a banker by trade who carried them into bankruptcy. Elizabeth, however, was humiliated. Her own theology taught her that God prospered in this world to all those who obeyed him.

And now we have have her face on the five pound note, an ironic statement in an overt guise.
