The date, usually on the first Tuesday in March during election years, in which the most election primaries for the American Presidential election are held. As of 2000, the states holding primaries, caucuses, or straw polls include: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, and Washington, as well as the territory of American Samoa.
