The chapter moves in between description of events and hallucinatory
fantasies from Bloom and Stephen.
The group of drunken students has moved from Burkes to Nighttown, the
red-light district. Stephen, abandoned by all his friends except for
Lynch, is followed by Bloom. The three enter the whorehouse of Bella
where Stephen drunk and hallucinating damages a chandelier. Bloom defends
Stephen (who flees after the incident) by paying the bill and also manages
to keep Stephen out of deeper troubles when he is struck down by soldiers.
In the final scene Bloom envisions his dead son Rudy, while taking
care of Stephen.
