Hyperemisis gravidarum is a rare disorder that occurs during pregnancy. It starts early in pregnancy, and involves heavy vomiting. This can cause
dehydration,
vitamin deficiencies,
weight loss and
liver damage.
Hyperemesis is only diagnosed when the sufferer has lost at least 5% of her original body weight. Hospitalization is frequently needed, to enable the woman to remain well hydrated and nourished. The severity of the disorder is such that sufferers are rarely able to do anything productive while suffering.
While most studies have shown that the children of hyperemesis gravidarum sufferers develop normally, termination may be considered, in order to save the woman's life, or prevent the suffering associated with this condition.
