Amelogenesis imperfecta is literaly a condition in which tooth enamel is not formed correctly. Both child and adult
teeth are covered with thin, weak, abnormal
enamel.
Diagnostic features include discoloured yellowish teeth, and soft, easily abraided enamel. The condition can be easily diagnosed by a dentist after a thourough oral exam.
Due to the nature of the enamel, it is very easy for the teeth to become damaged through use, or common accidents. The usual procedure that is reccomended to solve the problem is crowning of the teeth. This is beneficial in two respects. Firstly the natural colour of the teeth is disguised, and secondly the crown is much stronger, and less likely to be damaged than the original enamel.
