An inflammation of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot that can cause pain and/or disability.

The plantar fascia is located on the bottom of the foot, running underneath the bones. It is a very thick band of tissue. This can become inflamed in some people, and walking is made more difficult. Risk factors for this problem include flat foot, high arches, obesity, sudden weight gain, frequent running, and a tight Achilles tendon. A typical patient is a male between the ages of 40 and 70 years old.

It can normally be controlled by heel stretching exercises, shaped insoles, night splints, and anti-inflammatory medications. In severe cases temporary casting of the heel may be necessary to ensure complete rest. There are few long term risks.
