One of the stage
assistants in
kabuki theatre. They dress all in
black (it means 'black-clad') and are considered
invisible by the audience, even while doing complicated
scene-shifting and helping with
costume changes on
stage. They may also act as
prompts.
One who wears a hood, as most do, is called a kyogen; one who does not is called a koken.
