A song cycle by Schumann, his opus 48, on texts by Heine, whom Schumann met and was encouraged by in 1828. The title Dichterliebe "poet's love" is from a line by Friedrich Rückert: "Poet's love has always been inflicted by his own mishap. Almighty god, let us hope the best." They seem almost to form a novel, taken in sequence: the poet laments his lost love, and is reminded of happy days, is sometimes joyous but mainly gloomy.
