Giovanni Angelo Medici

Became Pope in 1559 and died in 1565. Had been victimised by Paul IV and so on coming to power arrested the family, friends and associates of Paul IV. Was also pro Hapsburg.

Reconvened Council of Trent for the third and final session in 1562-1563. He backed up all of the C of T’s decrees and ensured they were implemented throughout the Catholic countries.

He issued a new catechism and revised the Papal Index. Worked with his great friend and adviser, Cardinal Borromeo (Archbishop of Milan, where he had instituted reforms) to improve the moral fibre of Rome.

He set up the first seminary for the diocese of Rome. He also promoted many reform minded Cardinals and reformed the role of Cardinals by putting a minimum age limit on the job.
