Became Pope in 1591 and died in 1605. Continued implementing reforms particularly in religious houses in Rome.

Issued revised vulgate (1592), breviary (1602) and missal (1604). Encouraged severity of inquisition – over thirty heretics condemned to the stake during his pontificate.

Reluctantly accepted the conversion of Henry IV of Navarre King of France and the treaty of Nantes along with this. See also the French Wars of Religion
