It is also an important psychological landmark, the southwesternmost point of Europe. Ships coming from the north must go around this cape before turning in for the Mediterranean Sea.

It was here in 1419 that Portugese Prince Henry "The Navigator" founded a school for navigators. This school was the base for the many voyages of exploration and conquest he sponsored.
