medieval writer of the 5th/6th century, who compiled a
Latin version of
Aesop's Fables in
hexametric poetry, working with a 1st century text written by a certain Babrius.
Avianus' fables were widely read throughout the middle ages as a school text to teach introductory Latin. They formed the basis of many of the later bestiaries.
