Wahkiakum County is a county in Washington, located north of the Columbia River, close to its mouth. By both population and area, it is Washington's third smallest county, with a population of around 4500 people, and an area of 264 square miles. Wahkiakum also includes Puget Island, which at around 7 square miles, is one of the largest inhabited islands located in the Columbia River. Wahkiakum County is a little less than an hour distant from the Kelso-Longview area, and about 90 minutes from Portland, Oregon. The current economic base is sheep and cattle ranching.

Despite living for most of the decades of my life close to Wahkiakum County, it was only in the past year that I first visited it, in passing.
