A man-made port 35km south of the city of
Dubai, in the Emirate of the same name in the
UAE.
On its completion in 1980, Jebel Ali port was only the second man-made object visible from space (the first being the Great Wall of China.)
The city of Dubai is growing rapidly, thanks largely to the oil dynasty and the growth in shipping that Jebel Ali has allowed.
The Jebel Ali Free Zone, a duty-free area to target international investment (no company tax for the first 15 years), is extremely successful and will shortly be doubled in size.
This area is the hub of growth in Dubai and will ultimately sporn its own CBD.
Unfortunately, because it is a duty free zone, access to Jebel Ali port is restricted. Unless you work there, you can't get in. However, if you're willing to shell out 600 Dh to get into it (offsetable against anything you purchase, including drinks), the seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel that is near by, at Jumeira Beach has a bird's eye view of Jebel Ali and all the industrial works associated with it.
