Apparently, due to the popularization of video game consoles, thumbs are becoming more dominant than fingers to the users.

When youths are asked directions or quizzed upon the whereabouts of an object, they proceed to point the way using their thumb.

I was there at the start of the video games industry, but still think of my index finger to be the "pointy finger", where as the thumb might enable skills in tandem with pointing, such as holding a pencil.

Of course some might argue that one would surely point with the pencil if already in hand.

But that really isn't the point.
