An emergent social class. In this post-industrial world, class structure isn't what it used to be. The white collar/blue collar dichotomy seems to be breaking down. Pencil pushers are just as harried and disposable as any assembly line guy (in fact, it's probably more difficult to find a qualified tool-and-die maker than it is a Deputy Director of Corporate Communications. What it really comes down to is: Who's got the power? Who's making it happen? The answer, at least temporarily, is that those with immense technical prowess are holding more of the cards than ever before. They are the Code Class. Anyone who has ever watched a star developer tear into a CEO about lack of business vision knows what I'm talking about.
