Calcium is a
mineral that is crucial for proper
formation of strong bones and teeth. It also plays a vital role in maintaining regular
heartbeat and the proper transmission of
nerve impulses. Calcium stores determine the effect
peristaltic action of the
intestines and the health of
muscle fiber. This mineral is also necessary for
blood clotting and is believed to help prevent the development of
colon cancer. Calcium may also helped to reduce
high blood pressure and can minimize bone loss that commonly occurs to
post-menopausal women resulting in
osteoporosis.
A lack of calcium can cause
muscle cramps, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and
bone loss.
Calcium can help protect the bones and teeth from lead
toxicity; in children who have a low calcium level and are exposed to
lead, absorption of the lead is much higher. Calcium also regulates the
acid-alkaline balance in the blood,
metabolizes iron and can help protect against
radiation exposure. Calcium and
phosphorus should be balanced two-to-one in the human body.
