A Danish movie from 1998 by Thomas Vinterberg. Produced under the strict regulations of the
Dogme95 manifesto. The story in brief:
A rich family
patriach is celebrating his 60 years
birthday having a diner with about 30
ppl invited. The
ambience is
light, and as
dusk falls and the diner is served, the host is met by
spontaneous outbursts of
applause and song.
When one of his four
children eventually clears his
throat and calls for silence only he knows what is to come. A speech to
shock, a speech to
shatter. The most heart-breaking
night in living
memory is about to
descend on the
unsuspecting guest.
This movie gets under your skin,
especially because of its camera
movement and
intense quietness - both
results of the Dogme95.
