In pole vaulting, volzing is the intentional (as deemed by the track officials) use of the hands to reposition the crossbar. If officials agree an athlete is guilty of volzing on a jump, the jump is considered a failed attempt or the competitor may be disqualified. The origin of the word is a track & field meet held in Volzing, France where the practice of steadying the bar was first labeled illegal. Many athletes disagree with the rule, arguing that volzing is a remarkable skill for which the best vaulters should receive credit, and that the rule relies too much on the judgement of the officials in pole vault's typically objective event.
