English is, of course,
derived from this).
Originally from the name of the
patron goddess of money,
Juno Moneta (Moneta
meaning "she who
warns", or
admonisher), who watched over the
coinage of the
empire. It is also believed that she
guarded over
Rome itself, and warned it of
impending danger.
