pronounciation: wing-ee sting-ee (not a soft g)
When I was little, this was my generic term for any flying, stinging insect - bees, wasps, horseflies, yellowjackets, and the like. mosquitoes didn't count, because their sting isn't painful.
the sight of one of these would cause me to start shrieking "WINGIE-STINGIE! WINGIE-STINGIE!" and running around flailing my arms about my head to keep them away.
