Established in 1993 with funds provided by the David Cohen Family Charitable Trust and the Arts Council, the David Cohen British Literature Prize in the English Language is awarded in recognition for a lifetime's literary achievement. The winner receives £30,000, together with an additional award of £10,000 to be used by the winner in encouraging writers and readers, and from 2005 onwards also receives the Clarissa Luard Award, which allows the recipient to donate a further £12,500 to a project which encourages young people to read. It is also unusual in that the general public is invited to nominate the names of authors for consideration.
